Who will advance? Wang has only made it to this stage of a Grand Slam once before earlier this year at Roland Garros and she will be eager to make it a career-best showing with a victory against the Ukrainian. World #7 Elina Svitolina, for all her unquestionable quality, is yet to deliver on the biggest stage and has just two Grand Slam quarterfinal appearances to her name. A deep run in New York would thus be particularlywelcome and she faces world #52 Wang Qiang on in the third round.
Konta is coming off a very lengthy performance that took nearly two and a half hours, and she can struggle at times with unforced errors. Svitolina was already playing better tennis than Konta entering this match and it makes her an even safer bet given the one-sided head to head numbers. Svitolina is more trustworthy on hard court and hasnt had much trouble with Kontas game in four meetings.
And with that belief wedded to the undeniable talent Wang possesses, she will pose a formidable threat to Danielle Collins of USA. Chinas fourth best broke the Svitolina serve four times to end the Ukrainians challenge. It is a win that will surely only add to her belief, particularly after she won her first title in Acapulco last month. Indeed, Collins will surely need to find the same form which took her to the semifinals at the Miami Open last season if she hopes to progress. Wang Yafan earned her first top ten win by eliminating Elina Svitolina in the second round in Miami.
Simona Haleps new coach, Daniel Dobre, is obviously helping the Romanian. But when Halep is at the top of her game, precious few can find a way through. She certainly looked more at ease on court than she has in recent months in dismissing Taylor Townsend 6-3 6-1, a match many expected to be more competitive. Dobre has worked with the former world #1 before and clearly knows the Halep game, warts and all. Perhaps most importantly by keeping her from engaging in the sort of destructive negativity that has proved to be her undoing in the past.
BIG 4 H2H
Her offensive game has improved in recent years as well though she is unlikely to beat the Ukrainian in a slugging-match from the back of the court. Expect both players to cover plenty of distance in this match, with Wang at least Svitolinas equal in that department. Unforced errors are likely to have a greater bearing on the outcome of this match than winners. But with both such accomplished defenders, it may well prove to be consistency that is key.
Her backhand is probably her best shot, but she also hits the inside-out forehand particularly well. Svitolina is a good all-round player, boasting no dominant strengths but equally no glaring weaknesses. She is strong on both wings and has the power to hit through opponents without being able to match the Tours biggest hitters. Svitolina is also amongst the better movers in the sport and defends well even under heavy pressure.
But the swaggering American should ultimately have too much. The Chinese will provide a real challenge and expect Collins to have some tough moments. Indeed, another run to the semifinals looks very possible for the University of Virginia alum. That impressive mentality, a willingness to dig deep and find a path to victory, should stand her in good stead against Wang. In Collins opening match against 15-year-old American Whitney Osuigwe, she came out looking short of focus, but just about managed to claim the first set in a tiebreak. Thereafter, she was in complete control, blasting through Osuigwe in the second set to wrap up a 7-6 6-0 win.
The first of these, at the Indian Wells Masters last year, she won in a final set tiebreak before winning 6-1 5-7 6-2 on her way to the title in Dubai earlier this year. These two have played one another on two previous occasions, both of which were on a hard court, both of which were in the last 18 months and both of which Svitolina won. However, neither were comfortable victories as she was taken to a deciding set both times.
She opened her account with a convincing 6-1 6-4 win over Anna Karolina Schmiedlova before recording another straight-sets win in the second round against Italys 29th seed Camila Giorgi. However, Stephens should have the defensive skills to negate Marias net-rushing attack. Provided she doesnt dwell too long on any errors and missed chances, the last 16 should be well-within reach for the fourth seed. But Germanys Maria has been in impressive form in her own right so far at the Miami Open.
Elina Svitolina vs. Wang Yafan - 9/30/19 China Open Tennis Pick, Odds, and Prediction
But Yulia Putintseva, who has had a miserable start to the year, did impress in taking out the in-form, if weary-looking, Belinda Bencic in her second round match. But one does rather suspect that if Bencic had been at the top of her game, the outcome would have been much different. In this third round matchup, two out-of-sorts players, hoping to return to their A game, will clash. In that match, Putintseva won only 66% of her service points a stat which will need drastic improvement if she hopes to win against the 11th seed.
Indeed, the Latvian hasnt yet made it past the fourth round at any event this season. Anastasija Sevastova has, however, had challenges of her own. She also suffered an alarming mental lapse in the second set of her second-round match, allowing her opponent Katerina Siniakova to bagel her as a result. She recovered to win it in the decider, but such a cavalier approach will almost certainly be punished by Putintseva. To stand any chance, the Latvian will need to clean up her double faults and keep her composure. But unfortunately, little about her play so far this season suggests she is up to the challenge of doing so.
On the other side of the coin, Wang Yafan won her previous match in straight sets. Wang also won 4 return games during the victory. The serving was very strong from Wang Yafan as she won 74% of her serving points which allowed her to win all of her service games. It was a dominant performance by Wang as she only lost 3 games in the entire match.

Wang has already taken out one seeded player so far at this event, and Svitolina has made a habit of being knocked out around this stage of Grand Slams in the past. Having said that, she should be able to get over the line here, albeit narrowly. Expect the seventh seed to prevail in three sets. With Wang playing somehigh quality tennis coming into this match, Svitolina will need to be on her game to avoid being upset.
